The 300 Series Wall Hydrant was added to PRIER's offering with our 2007 purchase of Mansfield’s Brass Division.
The 300 Series was Mansfield’s original design, now manufactured by PRIER in our Kansas City area plant. The 300 Series provides year-round water to areas of structures that are prone to freezing. The hydrant valve is connected to the supply piping in the heated portion of the structure, eliminating the possibility of freezing.
The Mansfield 300 Series is available in sizes from 4” to 14”, in 2” increments.
Prier's 300 Series wall hydrant is the original "Mansfield 378" hydrant originally manufactured by Mansfield Plumbing Products in Perrysville Ohio. This valve is now made by Prier in our Grandview Missouri plant. It is a simple operating product and is fairly simple to repair.
Possible Repair Issues for the 300 Series Freezeless Wall Hydrant:
1. When the water is running, water leaks out from behind the handle [VIDEO]
This is a common maintenance occurrence for any packed valve of any brand or manufacture. It is overcome by simply tightening the plastic packing nut. The packing nut is a left hand or reverse threaded nut (older style hydrants may have a right hand threaded nut). This will force the packing tighter around the stem to eliminate leakage. Occasionally, the packing will need to be replaced if the packing nut has been repeatedly tightened.
The parts required for this are included in the Service Kit #630-7755.
2. The hydrant drips after shut off [VIDEO]
Since a Freezeless Hydrant actually shuts off inside the heated portion of the structure, the water inside the hydrant will drain out after shutoff. The shutoff point could be any distance from 4" to 14" inside the structure. This installation should also be pitched to allow the water to easily drain out of the hydrant. The hydrant may drip for up to 60 seconds after shutoff. If the water continues to drip after that time, you most likely need to replace the seat washer. This is a "OO Beveled Seat Washer” and is included in the Service Kit #630-7755.
3. Water is leaking from the hydrant inside my house
Unfortunately, your Freezeless Hydrant is broken, most likely beyond repair. This happens when the water cannot drain out of the Freezeless Hydrant, it freezes, expands and ruptures the copper shaft of the Freezeless Hydrant inside the structure. The most common reasons for this problem is that the garden hose was left attached to the hydrant during freezing weather, or the hydrant was not installed with the proper drainage pitch.
DO NOT OPERATE THE HYDRANT IF THIS IS OCCURRING!
Since the Hydrant shuts off inside the house, if it stays in the off position you will not get water inside the structure. IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO REMOVE THE HANDLE TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL OPERATION UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS REPAIRED BY YOUR PLUMBER!
4. The handle is missing from my hydrant
For any one of numerous reasons, your handle may be missing. Prier's Mansfield Style handle is unique to the Mansfield Style products. This style handle mates perfectly with our stem-end for a snug fit and years of reliable operation.
The required part number is #630-7965.
5. The stem end is damaged and you cannot operate the freezeless hydrant
Occasionally the stem of the Prier Mansfield Style 300 Series Freezeless Hydrant gets damaged beyond repair. This is most commonly caused by the hydrant being operated by pliers and damaging the brass on the end.
To determine the proper replacement stem, you need to determine the following:
1. Length of the stem, from brass tip to brass tip.
2. Using the acquired dimensions, determine which stem is required from the chart below:
